The origin of RED WHITE and BLUE DAY happened following 9/11. Wallace School (Hoboken) had an
assembly for patriotism and all the faculty, staff and children were asked to wear the colors. When
Kathy Temple (5th Grade Teacher at Wallace) saw the gymnasium filled with red, white and blue,
she made a request. She asked that all students write letters to the Mayor, asking if he could set
one day aside so that the entire City would proudly display flags and wear red, white and blue.
Kathy Temple and her 5th grade class marched up to City Hall and delivered over 500 letters and
the Mayor did in fact set aside one day, March 1st, as RED WHITE and BLUE DAY. Later that
month, an official proclamation was made at City Hall and Ms. Temple invited all veterans to join
her.

When Ms. Temple was presented with the proclamation, she was also awarded on from the
Governor declaring RED WHITE and BLUE DAY for the entire State of New Jersey. Ms. Temple also
won the American Legion Educator of the Year Award for Americanism for the City. She then went
on to win the County and the State. She received her award at the Wildwood Convention Center
in mid June 2006. Following her acceptance speech, she was given a standing ovation. Humbled,
she stated, "You should be getting the standing ovation. Without all of you veterans, I would not
be here today. YOU have done much more than I".
